Challenges with Registration of Educators
- Lack of knowledge about SACE.
- Educators only applying for registration when posts/senior posts are advertised.
- The monthly deduction in favour of SACE from all practicing educators by the DoE is perceived by educators as proof of registration. Note that to be registered one must apply to SACE and receive either a certificate or document of provisional registration from SACE as proof of registration.
- The monthly levy for all educators is currently R6.00.
- Educators failing to supply necessary documents when they come to register. The documents include the following:
 SACE application form
Certified copies of academic and professional qualifications (certificates received at graduation)
Certified copy of identity document and, in the case of married women, a certified copy of marriage certificate
R60.00 registration fee for South African educators and R120.00 for Foreign educators.
- Educators providing uncertified copies, therefore delaying the process
- Un/under qualified persons appointed to teach learning areas for which they have no clue.
- Un/under qualified persons appointed at educator posts applying for registration without a letter of recommendation from the employer/prospective employer. Note that the letter of recommendation does not qualify an applicant for automatic registration as Council must adjudicate on that recommendation.
- Educators faxing application forms even though it is clearly stipulated on the application form that they should not fax application documents.
- Educators sending us unmarked postal orders only without sender’s details.
- Educators sending us unmarked postal orders only without an application form.
- Educators sending us certificates of qualification without the application form and without writing the postal address.
- Educators lose SACE registration certificates at an alarming rate, which cost them R30.00 for a reprint.
For foreign educators the following documents should be submitted together with the application form:
Certified copies of professional qualifications (certificates).
Evaluation report for all foreign qualifications.
Proof of legal entry into the country (e.g. passport, visa, asylum seekers permit)
Letter of ‘good ethical and professional standing’ from the licensing body or education
ministry that stipulates that the educator’s right to teach has never been suspended, revoked or cancelled.
Note that: (Council will verify the authenticity of all documents in due course)
Proof of employment or pending employment at a school in South Africa.
Further conditions with regard to foreign educators:
All foreign qualifications to be evaluated by the Department of Education (DoE) or South
African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before application for registration.
Refugees and Asylum seekers will be granted a different dispensation on submission of relevant
documentation.
Provisional registration will be granted for 12 months only.
The registration fee for foreign educators is set at double the amount payable by South African nationals.
The letter of professional standing will only be issued after a full year of service at a recognised educational institution in South Africa.

The Statement of Professional Standing provides us with information regarding the educator’s past professional practice as a teacher. For example, it tells us whether the authorization to teach has ever been taken away for disciplinary reasons or whether the educator would still be welcome to teach in that country, province or state.
The statement must:
Verify that the educator was authorized to teach in that jurisdiction
State that the authorization was never suspended, cancelled or revoked
Come from the licensing authority or department of education/employing body in the case of independent sector.
Be an original and signed by the appropriate official
Not be more than one year old when we receive it
